I survived, dude! …coz I was DRUNK!

While you think alcohol can only add to your chances of getting injured, here’s a study that proves otherwise!

According to a study by researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago School of Public Health, an injury causes you less harm if you are drunk and wasted that time.

In the words of Lee Friedman, the author of the study-

 “After an injury, if you are intoxicated there seems to be a pretty substantial protective effect. The more alcohol you have in your system, the more the protective effect. At the higher levels of blood alcohol concentration, there was a reduction of almost 50 percent in hospital mortality rates. This protective benefit persists even after taking into account injury severity and other factors known to be strongly associated with mortality following an injury.”

The injuries that were studied included internal injuries, fractures, open wounds and everything except burns! So, seems like burns are the only thing to give you a reality check when you are wasted.

The explanation is that when one gets injured, the body goes into a crisis preservation mode which in turn starts a series of physiological panic switches. These panic switches can even end into death. While one is drunk or intoxicated, the body doesn’t hit the panic buttons and hence reduced chances of dying!

Now the whole thing is pretty cool but don’t you use it as an excuse for getting drunk and engaging into life threatening activities! There might be a chance that you’d be better at surviving the gunshot you got in the sudden brawl at the bar, which might not have surfaced in the first place if you were sober! Fair enough!
