They thrilled the ramp with their glamorous style and fascinating physical attributes. They also ruled the silver screen with their fabulous acting. Some of them are still casting a spell on their audience. Yes, your guess is right! I am talking about the model turned actresses.

Here are some Bollywood actresses, who started their career with ramp modelling and gradually, made a way to the film industry.

1.  Aishwarya Rai


Former Miss World, Aishwarya Rai, pursued a career in modelling before becoming an actress. She appeared on the cover page of Vogue magazine 3 times. A commercial ad of Pepsi with Aamir Khan brought her in the limelight. She appeared in several ads, such as Fuji films, Lakme, Philips, Lux, Coca Cola, Casio pager, Longines watches and Palmolive. She was also roped in as the brand ambassador of De Beers diamond in India. Her first Bollywood film was Aur Pyar Ho Gaya.

2.  Diya Mirza


Before making entry in the Bollywood, she modelled for the TV and print ad campaigns of several brands, like Emami, Lipton, Walls, etc. In 2000, she won the title of Miss Asia Pacific. Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein was her first movie as an actress.

3.  Bipasha Basu


The modelling career of Bipasha commenced when she was just 17 years old. A meeting with Mehr Jessia Rampal at a function in Kolkata brought a U-turn in her life. She suggested Bipasha to participate in the Godrej Cinthol Supermodel contest. Basu not only participated in the contest, but also won the title. In the same year (1996), she won one more contest- the Ford Models contest- Supermodel of the World. After that, she was flown to New York by the Ford Company, where she began her modelling career. She appeared in several ads and over 40 magazine covers. She made her debut in the film industry in the year 2001 with Vijay Galani’s Ajnabee.

4.  Deepika Padukone


Deepika initiated modelling when she was in college. She did modelling for several Indian brands, like Limca, Close-up, Dabur Lal powder and Liril. Maybelline (a cosmetic company) made Padukone its international spokesperson. She was also chosen as the brand ambassador for ‘Jewels of India’ retail jewellery show and Levi Strauss. She won the title “Model of the Year” at 5th annual Kingfisher awards. Deepika was also selected for Kingfisher Swimsuit Calendar 2006. At the Idea Zee Fashion Awards, in 2006, she won the titles of “Fresh Face of the Year” and “Female Model of the Year (Commercial Assignments)”. She made her debut in the Indian film industry with Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om.

5.  Malaika Arora Khan


This Chaiyya Chaiyya girl was the first VJ of MTV in India. Soon, Malaika was promoted to MTV interviewer. She also anchored MTV’s popular show- “Love Line and Style Check”. She appeared in several commercial ads, like De Beers, Tanishq, Benzer, Pearl Pet, Mafatlal, etc. Malaika also worked for several concerts and award ceremonies for TV channels. She has starred in movies for item numbers and cameos. She got immense fame for her item songs ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ and ‘Munni Badnaam Hui’.

6.  Katrina Kaif


Her modelling career started at the age of 14 with a jewellery campaign in London. She did modelling at the London Fashion Week. She has also done campaigns for Arcadius and La Senza. Film maker Kaizad Gustad noticed the work of this gorgeous model and offered her a role in film ‘Boom’. She accepted the role and moved to Mumbai. She appeared in various ads, like Fevicol, LG, Veet, Lakme and Coca Cola. This model turned actress has worked hard to improve her Hindi.

7.  Anushka Sharma


This new comer has made her place in the Bollywood in a very short period. Anushka modelled herself for the first time for Wendell Rodricks’s Les Vamps Show at the Lakme Fashion Week. Later, at the Spring Summer ’07 Collection, she was selected as Rodricks’s finale model. She did campaigns for Whisper, Fiat Palio, Nathella Jewelry and Silk & Shine. She made her entry in the film industry with Aditya Chopra’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.
