Bad Food Combinations and Food Combinations that Steal good health

One should eat foods in right combinations for better health.‘Right combinations’of food in meal are significant for proper digestion and absorption of nutrients by the body and also provides natural, efficient food metabolism. Improper food combinations may cause gas, indigestion, diarrohea, stomach ache and headache in the short term and problems, like hypoglycaemia, ulcers, colon cancer, eczema in the long term. Therefore, it is vital to know what all food combinations should be avoided for good health. Here is the list-

Milk with melons

Melons and milk are incompatible. Both produce a cooling effect. Melon is diuretic, and milk is laxative needing more time to digest. The action of HCl curdles the milk in the stomach. Hence it is recommended to avoid consuming sour fruits, melons, cheese, fish, yoghurt and sour cream with milk.

Avoid cold water during and after meals

Consuming cold water during or immediately after a meal lessens the digestive power of body. Ice-cooled water makes the digestive enzymes inactive that leads to partial digestion of food and absorption of nutrients in wrong combinations. So, it is advised to sip lukewarm water during the meal to aid digestion.

Potatoes with fruits

Fruits (fructose) digest easily while potatoes (starchy food) take longer time to digest. There is a time difference for both the foods, hence Ayurveda suggests not eating potatoes and fruits together.

Heating or cooking with honey

Honey becomes toxin when cooked. Cooked or heated honey takes long to digest, and its molecules become glued to stick to mucous membrane and lock fine channels, producing poison.

Milk with meat

Meat gives heating effect while milk gives a cooling effect. Milk and meat counteract each other disturbing agni and producing ama. Hence do not eat them together in a single meal. Consume separately in a gap of at least 4 hours.

Melons with Grains

When grains and melons are taken together, they lead to indigestion. Eat melons alone as it digests alone, whereas grains need more time for digestion.

Bananas with milk

Avoid consuming bananas with milk as it reduces ‘Agni’ and changes the intestinal flora making toxins that can lead to sinus congestion cold, allergies and cough.
