Split-up and re-marriages are common in Indian film industry. But, now-a-days, divorce is not a big issue, even in sports and political world. There are some divorce cases, which remained in limelight for a long time either due to their link with the high profile status or their cost involved into the matter and so, holds an important place in our list.
1. Prabhu Deva and Latha- The Costliest Divorce
Actor and choreographer, Prabhu Deva gave divorce to his wife of 15 years, Latha in 2010. The couple got married in 1995. This is the costliest divorce of the Tamil film industry. The reason for their divorce is Prabhu’s close relationship with Southern actress Nayanthara and negligence towards family. Prabhu gave properties worth Rs. 25-30 crore as a settlement. Apart from this, he also bears medical and educational expenses of his 2 sons.
2. Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta
Aamir Khan married to Reena Dutta on 18th April, 1986. The couple has 2 children- daughter, Ira and son, Junaid. Their marriage continued for 15 years and in December 2002, Aamir filed for divorce. The court gave the custody of both children to Reena allowing Khan to meet them thrice a week. Aamir married to Kiran Rao on 28th December 2005. The couple has a son, Azad.
3. Mahesh Bhupathi and Shvetha Jaishankar
Indian tennis ace, Mahesh Bhupathi, after 7 years of long marriage, he got separated from her wife, Shvetha Jaishankar, in July 2010. The divorce took place by their mutual consent in family court in Mumbai. The main reason of their split-up was Mahesh’s close relations with former Miss Universe and bollywood actress, Lara Dutta. Bhupathi and Lara tied knot on 16th February 2011. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Saira, on 20th January 2012.
4. Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh
Love makes people blind. This saying is perfectly applicable in Saif’s life. He was so madly in love with Amrita that he ignored the age difference (Amrita is 12 years older than Saif) and married to her in October 1991. The couple has two children- daughter Sara Ali Khan and son Ibrahim Ali Khan. However, their relationship lasts only for 13 years, and the couple split up in 2004. Both the children reside with their mom. After divorce, Saif dated a Swiss model, Rosa Catalano, for 3 years. They were considering marriage but due to some reasons, they broke up. Nawab of Pataudi began dating Kareena (who is 10 years younger than Saif) in 2007. Recently, on 16th October 2012, they got married.
5. Sanjay Dutt and Rhea Pillai
Sanjay Dutt wedded to model Rhea Pillai in 1998 and split in 2005. This was his second wedding. After splitting with Dutt, Rhea married to Indian tennis player, Leander Paes. As a divorce settlement, he handed over a Honda Accord car and Bandra apartment worth Rs. 8 crore to her. Before tying knot with Pillai, Sanjay married to Richa Sharma in 1987. Richa died of brain tumour. The couple has a daughter, Trishala, who is currently residing in the U.S. with her grandparents. In 2008, at a private ceremony in Goa, Sanjay married to his girlfriend of 2 years, Manyata. On 21st October 2010, the couple was blessed with twins- a girl, Iqra and a boy, Shahraan.
6. Mohammad Azharuddin and Sangeeta Bijlani
Mohammad Azharuddin, former cricketer, married to Naureen. From this marriage, he got two sons- Asad and Ayaz. On 16th September 2011, Ayaz (19 years) died in a road mishap. However, this marriage lasts for only 8 years. After that, he tied knot with former Miss India and Bollywood actress, Sangeeta Bijlani. But, unfortunately, this marriage was also no longer successful and after 14 years of nuptial, he divorced Sangeeta. Azharuddin’s close associations with Jwala Gutta (badminton player) is said to be the key reason of their divorce.
7. Shashi Tharoor and Christa Giles
Shashi Tharoor, former state external state affairs ministers and a renowned writer, has wedded thrice. He first married to Tilottama Mukherji. From this marriage, he got two sons- Ishaan and Kanishk. After divorcing Tilottama, he married to Canada based Christa Giles. They failed to keep their relationship for a long time and in 2010, they split-up. On 22nd August 2010, Tharoor married to a philanthropist and an entrepreneur, Sunanda Pushkar.
8. Omar Abdullah and Payal Nath
Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, announced divorce from his wife Payal Nath, in September 2011. They got married in 1994 and have 2 sons- Zahir and Zamir.
