The microwave has become a household necessity and why not? After all, it is a great kitchen helper! Right from heating leftovers to baking potatoes, it serves a lot of purposes and has become ubiquitous. But, here are a few more things we doubt you knew you could do with your microwave. Read on to know what they are.

1. Softening Sweeteners

You do not need to throw away crystallized honey and hardened brown sugar; instead, you just need to heat them. Sprinkle a few drops of water on to the bag of brown sugar and heat it up in the microwave for about 20 seconds. To liquefy honey, remove the lid of the jar and place the jar in your microwave for 30-60 seconds and turn it to medium.

2. Speeding up Bread Baking

Yeast dough takes about one hour to rise. However, you can reduce that time to 15 minutes by putting the dough in your microwave. Place your dough in a big bowl and wrap it with a plastic cover. Now, put one cup of water at the rear end of your microwave, before you place the bowl in it. Keep the temperature low and heat the dough for 3 minutes. Now, take a pause for 3 minutes so that the dough rises. Heat it again for another 3 minutes. For the next 6 minutes, allow the dough to rise so that it doubles up in size.

3. Sterilizing Sponges

The problem with sponges is they soak the smell of the wiped food and retain it, even after repeated detergent washes. Dejected and annoyed with the pesky smell, most of us throw the sponges away. But, you don’t need to do that anymore! Pour a few drops of lemon juice or white vinegar in a bowl full of water and soak the sponge in it. Now, heat it in the microwave for about a minute. This is done because the heat disinfects and deodorizes the sponge and rids your sponge of the most stubborn smells of chicken or raw eggs.

4. Cleaning Your Cutting Board

Even after thorough cleaning, if your cutting board still appears unclean, here’s one way- sterilize it in your microwave. Wash it, rub lemon over it and now, heat it for a minute on high.

5. Other Great Ideas

You can use your microwave for poaching eggs, making potato chips, frothing milk for your latte, toasting nuts, drying herbs, softening cheese, etc.

So, besides being your kitchen aid, the microwave can also do a great many things to ease your work and finish off chores. Ever seen a better multi-tasker? We doubt very much!
