20 Home Remedies for Constipation

Feeling difficulty in passing bowel? Is this condition making you uncomfortable and bloated? Constipation is a common digestive disorder that occurs due to lack of fluids and fibres in the diet, excessive consumption of dairy products, strong pain killers (such as iron pills, narcotics and antidepressants), etc. It may also lead to abdominal pain, vomiting and headache.

Constipation can be cured by bringing changes in the lifestyle and improving eating habits. This problem can be solved at home by natural products. Here are some home remedies for constipation.

1. Lukewarm Water

Drink 2-3 glasses of lukewarm water, early in the morning. It will help not only in getting relieve from constipation, but also in preventing pimples and acne.

You can also store water in a copper vessel, overnight. Early in the morning, drink 3-4 glasses of this water.

2. Kali Harad


Take some kali harad powder and roast it with ghee. Take one teaspoon each night. Keep it on the tongue and suck it. Don’t swallow it.

3. Nutmeg


Rub nutmeg (jaiphal/javitri) on a clean stone, with lime juice. Take 1 teaspoon to treat constipation.

4. Bottle Gourd Juice

Drink 1 cup of bottle gourd (louki) juice, early in the morning. It eliminates constipation naturally.

5. Raisin


Take an earthen utensil and soak some raisins in it, for the whole night. In the morning, chew them properly.

Alternatively, dip 8-10 raisins in a cup of milk. Boil it. Eat the raisins followed by milk.

6. Aloe Vera Juice


Take one cup of aloe vera juice. To it, mix rock salt and black pepper powder. In the morning, sip it on an empty stomach. Repeat this continuously for 2 weeks. It’s an effective remedy against constipation.

Note- Pregnant women should not practice this remedy.

7. Castor Oil


Take a glass of lukewarm milk and mix 1 tsp of castor oil in it. Drink it at night, before bedtime. Castor oil stimulates the bowel movements, thereby, solve the problem of constipation.

8. Fig

Consume fig in the morning, in an empty stomach. Alternatively, boil 7-8 figs in water. Drink the water, before going to sleep.

9. Triphala Powder


In a glass of lukewarm milk or water, add one teaspoon of triphala powder. Consume it at night, before bedtime. It’s a good home remedy for constipation.

10. Garlic


Garlic helps in eradicating constipation, naturally. You can chew it raw or use it in juices and vegetable dishes.

11. Dates


Boil some dates with milk. Consume it. It will surely relieve constipation.

12. Asafoetida (Hing)


Asafoetida is very effective in digestive problems. Use it daily in cooking food. You can also combine a bit of black salt and a pinch of asafoetida, in warm water. To it, add ¼ tsp of dry ginger powder. Sip it slowly.

13. Fennel Seed (Saunf)


Take some fennel seeds. Roast it and have it with warm water, each night. It’s the most recommended home cure for constipation.

14. Spinach


Extract the juice of spinach and drink it every day. Alternatively, you can prepare the soup of spinach and consume it along with meal.

15. Fenugreek (Methi)


Take fenugreek leaves and cook it with green onion. This vegetable helps in preventing constipation.

16. Lemon Juice


Mix lemon juice with warm water. Drink it two-three times a day.

17. Apple Cider Vinegar


Mix 2 tbsp of apple cider vinegar, with a glass of water. Stir it well. Drink it at least thrice a day. Alternatively, blend apple cider vinegar with grape juice or apple juice.

18. Flax Seeds (Alsi)


Consume 4-5 flax seeds with a glass of water. The other way is to add a tbsp of flax seeds in one glass of water. Leave it for four to five hours. Drink this water.

19. Cabbage Juice


Cabbage is rich in fiber content. Take out the juice of cabbage and drink it twice a day, before meal.

20. Honey


Eat one tbsp of honey, daily in the morning and evening.

Some Healthy Tips

  • Don’t take laxative tablets for constipation, in excess quantity.
  • Include fiber rich food and fruits like papaya, apple, guava, and grapes, in your diet.
  • Avoid constipation triggering foods, such as pasteurized milk, fried foods, cheese, coffee, junk, processed or canned foods.
  • Chew the food properly.
  • Do exercise regularly.
  • Drink abundance of water.
