Dry mouth is a condition, in which the saliva production in the mouth is hindered. Medically it is known as ‘Xerostomia’. Person who is suffering from dry mouth may encounter bad breath, problem in chewing, tasting and speaking, sores in the mouth, excessive thirst, and sticky mouth. Dry mouth is caused due to diarrhoea, vomiting, excessive sweating, fever, arthritis, anaemic, hypertension, diabetes, and side-effect of sedatives. You can combat dry mouth with the help of home remedies.
Below are some home remedies to deal with dry mouth.
1. Hard Candies and Chewing Gums
Though, eating hard candies and chewing gums can lead to tooth decay, but it’s a very effective remedy for curing dry mouth. It helps in stimulating the production of saliva.
Note- Use sugar-free candies and chewing-gums.
Suck on some crushed ice cubes, whenever you feel dry mouth. It will keep your mouth moist for a long time.
An ‘obvious’ remedy, for dry mouth, is to imbibe a lot of water.
4. Salted Water
Add ½ tsp. of salt to one cup of warm water and gargle with this solution. It’s very effective home remedy for treating dry mouth.
5. Water Rich Foods
Peaches, cucumber, and watermelon are rich in water. Eat these foods in plenty to eliminate dry mouth.
6. Sugar-free Popsicles
Suck on sugar-free popsicles. It will help in stimulating the saliva flow.
Peel the ginger. Chop it into small pieces. Tuck the chopped ginger back into your cheeks or suck it on. It provides a long-lasting treatment for dry mouth.
8. Cayenne Pepper
Add cayenne pepper to your food. Alternatively, take ½ cup water and ½ tsp. cayenne pepper to it. Drink it. It will stimulate the production of saliva.
Take 3-4 cloves. Suck on them or swirl them around, till they lose their effectiveness.
10. Fennel Seeds
Mix 1 tsp. each of aniseed seeds (saunf) and fennel seeds (methi). Eat it. It acts as a mouth freshener and also improves the saliva flow.
11. Aloe Vera Juice
Swish your mouth with fresh aloe vera juice. You can also drink aloe vera juice for getting relief from dry mouth.
12. Baking Soda
Take ½ tsp. of baking soda, 1 tsp. of salt, 1 Tbsp. of sugar, and 3-4 drops of lime juice. Mix all the ingredients. Drink it. This is one of the best home remedies to eliminate the dryness of the mouth.
13. Cardamom Powder
Put one tsp. of cardamom powder to a glass of hot water. Blend it well and leave for fifteen minutes. Drink it every day. Along with moistening your mouth, this remedy will also eliminate bad breath.
- Constant breathing through mouth results in dry mouth. So, instead of mouth, breathe through the nose.
- Brush and floss your teeth properly. It will alleviate the symptoms of dry mouth.
- Abstain from chewing tobacco and alcohol; otherwise, it may worsen the condition of dry mouth.
- Drink water or juices often, while eating food.
- Avoid coffee or tea, as they are rich in caffeine and may aggravate dry mouth.
- Don’t use alcohol containing mouthwashes.
