After drinking excessive alcohol, you may experience what is known as a hangover. Dizziness, exhaustion, sensitivity to sound and light, headaches, vomiting, low blood sugar, dry mouth, inability to concentrate and nausea are some of the symptoms associated with hangovers. The effects of hangovers can be more intense, if you don’t drink water before consuming alcohol, drink on an empty stomach and intake a large quantity of alcohol in a short time. However, your body can revert to normal condition within twenty-four hours, but in case, if the symptoms are excessively intolerable, you can try home remedies.

Here are some home remedies for hangovers.

1. Cabbage

Chew raw cabbage. Else, mix cabbage juice with tomato juice. It helps in treating neural disturbance and headaches caused due to a hangover. It also decreases the cravings for alcohol.

2. Lemon

Drink sugarless lemon tea. It will flush out the undesirable materials from your body. Else, take a glass of cold water. Add fresh lemon juice and a little amount of sugar to it. It will help in controlling the blood sugar level, after an excessive consumption of alcohol.

3. Tomato

Tomato works wonder in curing hangover. Extract the juice of tomato and mix juice of fresh lemon in it. Consume it. This remedy will give you quick respite from hangover.

4. Peppermint

Chew 3-5 peppermint leaves. Else, boil 6-10 peppermint leaves in a cup of boiling water. Drink it. It will give you fast relief.

Drink a cup of ginger tea or chew 3-4 small pieces of ginger to get fast relief. Alternatively, take a fresh ginger root. Cut it into 10-12 slices. Boil it in 4 cups of water for 10-15 minutes. To it, add ½ cup of honey, juice of ½ lemon and 1 orange. Mix them well. Drink this concoction. It will help in overcoming the symptoms of hangover.

Take 3-4 tsps of honey. Another option is to add lemon juice and honey (as per your taste) to a cup of boiled water. Drink it hot. It is one of the good home remedies to treat hangover.

7. Bananas and Apples

Eat an apple on an empty stomach. It will provide you respite from headache. You can also add a Tbsp of banana shake and drink it. This home remedy will help in regaining potassium and blood-sugar, you lost due to alcoholism.

9. Orange Juice

Drink a large glass of orange juice. It will treat dehydration and low blood sugar, resulted due to drinking alcohol.

10. Apple Cider Vinegar

Take a tsp of apple cider vinegar. Take ½ glass of water. Mix a tsp each of soda bicarbonate and apple cider vinegar. This remedy helps in reducing toxicity and balancing pH level in the body.

11. Asparagus (Shatavari)

Precautionary Measures to Avoid a Hangover

  • Don’t drink alcohol, if you want to prevent a hangover. But, if you can’t resist yourself from drinking, try to drink in a small quantity.
  • Dark coloured alcohol like whiskey, brandy, tequila and scotch causes hangovers. Therefore, instead of consuming these beverages, choose light drinks such as vodka.
  • Don’t smoke while drinking, otherwise it may lead to hangover.
  • Drink 2-3 glasses of water while consuming alcohol. It decreases the probability of getting a hangover.
  • Drink a glass of water or eat something before drinking.
  • While drinking, keep eating salads or snacks.
