Music definitely is a stress buster for most of us, but how about finding out the perfect melodies to calm your mind, body and soul? I guess we’ll save some money on the spa’s and massages!

Sound and music therapies are not new to the world. At times, music has cured people out of serious ailments, and using it as a way to relax is just a common practice that each one of us does in our own way.

This 8 minute long melody has been declared the most relaxing tune till date, by scientists. They say it’s a beautiful combination of bass lines, arranged harmonies and rhythms, featuring the sounds of piano, guitar, and electronic version of natural soundscapes.

The study involved 40 women. They were given difficult puzzles to solve against the clock, to induce stress, and sensors were connected. Different songs were played in the lab, and their heart rate, breathing, brain activity and blood pressure were tested. It came out that this song ‘weightless by Marconi union’ scored 11 percent higher in relaxing than any other song. It caused drowsiness among the women in the lab. Also, there was 65 percent reduction in overall anxiety, and brought them 35 percent down to their resting rates.

Listen for Yourself

Lyz Cooper, the founder of British Academy of Sound Therapy says that the song is a mixture of scientific theories and musical principles, which work together to create a calming effect. she tells the anatomy of this song “It contains a sustaining rhythm that starts at 60 beats per minute, and gradually slows to around 50. While listening, your heart rate comes to match that beat gradually. It is important that the song is eight minutes long because it takes about five minutes for this process, known as entrainment, to occur. The fall in heart rate also leads to a fall in blood pressure. The harmonic intervals – or gaps between notes – have been chosen to create a feeling of euphoria and comfort. And there is no repeating melody, which allows your brain to completely switch off because you are no longer trying to predict what is coming next. Instead, there are random chimes, which help to induce a deeper sense of relaxation. The final element is the low, whooshing sounds and hums that are like buddhist chants. High tones stimulate but these low tones put you in a trance-like state.”

Marconi Union has made this song with the help of sound therapists. They say that earlier they used to make melodies based on their gut feel, and that they are aware of the effect of music, but even they are surprised with the immense effect this particular melody is capable of giving. While the study was on, some women relaxed to the state of drowsiness, so it is advised not to hear this song while driving.

Dr David Lewis-Hodgson, Mind-lab International, the conductor of the research, said: “The results clearly show that the track induced the greatest relaxation – higher than any of the other music tested. Brain imaging studies have shown that music works at a very deep level within the brain, stimulating not only those regions responsible for processing sound but also ones associated with emotions.”
