1.  Can a Girl or Boy be Identical Twins?

The short and sweet answer to it is- ‘NO’. Actually, the general public lacks the understanding of this term. . The term ‘fraternal’ or ‘identical’ describes, how twins are formed, not how they look. Monozygotic (identical) twins are of the same gender. Identical twins are formed from a single zygote. Identical twins can either be female (XX) or male (XY), not male and female. On the other hand, fraternal twins are formed from two different eggs, fertilized by two separate sperms. Thus, fraternal twins can either be two boys, two girls or one of each.

2.   Can Twins have Different Birthdays?

Twins are defined as two offspring, who are born together. But, it is not necessarily on the same day. They might be born only few minutes apart.

3.   Is there any Genetic or Family Connection to Twinning?

There is a genetic connection to twining only, if mother inherits the hyper-ovulation gene and resulting twins are fraternal twins. Identical (Monozygotic) twins are random and do not run in families.

4.   Do Twins have their Secret Language?

It is a myth that twins share a secret language. Terms such as cryptophasia, autonomous language or idioglossia describe the concept of twin language.  It is a twin mimicking, incoherent sounds that all babies babble. It is their way of making the connection and developing the language.

For identical (Monozygotic) twins, answer is “NO”. Identical twins possess similar genetic make-up. Their DNA is like two peas in a pod, which is virtually indistinguishable.
